The shower is where we cleanse ourselves and “Mary” explores spiritual cleansing through the use of repeated images of me in the shower being cleansed and eventually merging into an intense light as the last few scenes in the video are intensely bright.  “Ave Maria” sung by Kiri Te Kanawa-the soundtrack for “Mary” celebrates the repetitive act of cleansing and refers to the Blessed Mother-Mary as a source of divine light. Each day for 40 days I took a color polaroid of myself and wrote with pen the thoughts that were in my mind around the Polaroid that I pasted on the center of paper I took that day. “40 Days…” began on December 15, 02 and ended on January 24,03.  “40 Days” is based on the psychological /spiritual notion that self reflection and focus on a given point for the prescribed 40 days will bring change e.g. Christ was in the desert for 40 days.  I was focused on discovering what was on my mind.
